Millions of Americans suffer from extensive tooth loss. If you’re a part of that group, you know from experience how much it can affect your quality of life. Not only does it make you look older, but it changes the way you bite, chew, and speak. Fortunately, dentures are an excellent way to complete your smile and restore your confidence! If you’re interested in moving forward with this method of tooth replacement, you might be wondering how long it will take to complete the process. Luckily, we’ve got you covered. Here’s what you can expect from start to finish.
Dental Examination
The first step on your journey towards your new smile is a thorough oral examination. Your dentist will assess your teeth and the current state of your oral health to determine whether dentures are a viable option for you. They’ll check for signs of concerning dental problems that can interfere with the process, such as infection, tooth decay, or previous dental work. At this initial visit, you’ll get an estimated completion timeframe for the procedure and find out if you need preparatory dental work before getting dentures.
Extraction
Did your dentist say you needed to have teeth extracted? If so, the denture process will take a bit longer than anticipated since the extraction sites will need time to heal. Depending on the size of the site and the patient’s oral health, the healing process can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months to complete. Once you’re fully healed, your dentist can continue the process and begin making your new dentures.
Making the Dentures
After your examination (and preliminary dental work if that was necessary), your dentist will take impressions and measurements of your teeth to begin making your dentures. They may also create a wax mockup of the prosthetic teeth to ensure they fit your mouth perfectly. Your dentist will send what they have to the lab so they can build your oral appliances using the specifications.
Fitting the Dentures
Once your dentures have been made, you’ll return to the clinic for a fitting. These adjustment appointments are necessary to ensure your appliances fit with pain or issue. Your dentist will make sure that you can wear and use the dentures comfortably. They’ll also perfect the fit and adjust the teeth so they’re the right length and width as it can affect your appearance.
Placing the Dentures
Finally, the time has come. After your dentist has made all the final adjustments, the completed dentures will be placed in your mouth. While you shouldn’t feel any discomfort, it will take some time for you to get used to wearing, eating, and speaking with them. However, once you get past that period, you’ll have the same function and control as with your old smile!
Now that you know what to expect, are you ready to start your journey towards your new smile? Contact your dentist and schedule a consultation. They’ll help you determine whether dentures are the right option for you!
